Today I applied for (and interviewed for) a job as a video game tester for Playstation. It was one of those mass hiring things where they say they'll be at said location for a certain amount of time and everyone who needs a job just shows up and hopes. I think my chances are good. They said they're hiring a lot of people, and I play video games a lot now that I don't have a job, so I have the experience necessary to do it.
It only pays $9/hour. But, it would be 40+ hours a week. And, it would be a contract for about a month. So, if I hate it, at least I'd know I only have to do it for one month. And, working 40 hours/week at $9/hour for a month will give me enough to keep looking for a real job in the meantime. Or, if I like it, I would probably have the chance to renew my contract.
Part of the job would be "putting in hours." Apparently, every game needs to be played for a certain number of hours before it can be released. So, I'd just have to play whatever game all day, every day, over and over.
Part of the job would be looking for bugs and glitches in games, and recording them and what I did to make it happen, and if I was able to replicate the glitch. This bug-finding could mean playing one small part of a game over and over and over for days on end. Which would suck.
They could also tell us things like "play level one without killing any guys" and then we'd have to do that, and record what happens. They sometimes use us to tell them if a part is too hard or too easy or whatever.
So, it sounds like there could be some cool days and some really boring and horrible days. But, it will pay the bills, and that's the main thing because I'm getting close to the bottom of my barrel.
Sounds pretty awesome. If it was playing Mario tons of hours then I would be in. A short term contract is awesome too - but I'm no good at long term commitment.
